After the argument

What to say after an argument

The short answer

After an argument, say one short, honest thing that lowers the temperature — not a full re-argument. Good options: acknowledge the moment ("That got heated, and I don't want to leave it like this"), own your specific part if you have one, or ask for time ("I want to come back to this when I'm calmer"). Save the details for later, when you're both steadier.

Start with the smallest true sentence

The first thing you say after a fight sets the tone for everything after it. Aim for a sentence that is true, short, and doesn't reopen the case. You don't need to resolve the issue in this moment.

  • "That got heated. I don't want to leave it like this."
  • "I'm still upset, but I care about sorting this out."
  • "I'd like to talk again once we've both had some space."

If you want to apologize, be specific

A useful apology names the action, not just the feeling. "I'm sorry I raised my voice" lands differently than "sorry you're upset." Only apologize for what you genuinely feel responsible for.

  • "I'm sorry I interrupted you. I'd like to hear the rest."
  • "I said something unfair about your family. That wasn't okay."

If you need time, say so — and it's fine not to promise a time

Walking away silently can feel like punishment to the other person. Naming the break helps. Research from the Gottman Institute describes how 'flooding' — being physically overwhelmed — makes productive conversation very hard, and recommends a real break before continuing.

  • "I want to continue this when I can give it my full attention. I'd like to take a break first."

What to avoid right after

Avoid re-stating your whole position, keeping score, or sending a long message while you're still flooded. Also avoid demanding an immediate response — the other person may need time too.

1 · Choose a starting point

Come back to something unfinished, calmer this time.

2 · A few short answers

3 · Your draft

Private by design: your answers never leave this browser tab and aren't saved — closing the page erases them. Copied text stays on your clipboard until you copy something else. This is a starting point; change anything that doesn't sound like you.

Common questions

Should I text or talk in person after an argument?

A short text can be a good bridge ("I don't want to leave it like this — can we talk later?"). Save the substance for a calmer conversation, ideally in person or on a call.

What if my partner doesn't respond?

Give it time. You can say what you needed to say without requiring an answer. If silence is being used to control or punish you repeatedly, that's worth talking to someone outside the relationship about.
